Short Bio

I am a Research Fellow at GIGA German Institute of Global and Area Studies, Hamburg. My research interests include populism, diasporas, political Islam, and identity politics, with a special focus on Turkey and Egypt. In 2011, I received my PhD in Political Science at Bilkent University. Before my appointment at GIGA, I held researcher or teaching positions at Yale University, American University in Cairo, Ipek University in Ankara, the Swedish Defence University, and the University of Bremen. My peer-reviewed articles have appeared in journals including Comparative Studies in Society and History, Third World QuarterlyPS: Political Science and PoliticsIdentities, and Mediterranean Politics. I have also been funded by several institutions such as the Swedish Institute, Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, and Gerda Henkel Foundation.
